From “Kaarin,” We are wondering what other labs are using for a positive (deficient) control for factor XIII assay by the clot-lysis methodology. Deficient plasma?
Hello, Kaarin, thanks for your question, which will attract some responses soon. A quick check of major plasma control distributors shows that only Hyphen BioMed, distributed in North America by Aniara, provides a factor XIII deficient plasma. We’ve also had some past discussion on factor XIII assays, linked here. I wonder how many of us continue to use urea solubility as our primary assay?
We use the thrombin/acetic acid methodology for factor XIII
We use the thrombin/acetic acid methodology for factor XIII screen with no added Ca++. We do not rerun the assay, the reference lab does if required. With this technique we use EDTA plasma as our positive control, as there is no Ca++ available for XIII X-linking.

Hello, Kaarin and Crystal. Precision BioLogic Inc does provide a factor XIII-deficient control. Their CryoChek controls are assayed for factor XIII levels.

Hi there,
We are still performing the monochloroacetic acid solubility testing, using George King’s Factor XIII deficient plasma.
