Thanks to my friend and colleague Gordon Ens, Inflammatory Markers Laboratory, for the heads-up on this August 31, 2018 Cleveland HeartLab article, Aspirin for the Heart, One Dose Doesn’t Fit All (click or tap) This is in follow-up to our August 13 post, Weight-based Aspirin Dosing, featuring Santosh Kadel at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The Cleveland Heart article features the AspirinWorks assay. A recent series of articles support aspirin dosing for those at risk for coronary artery disease, and others indicate that asprin prophylaxis in those who lack cardiac indications is ineffective and unnecessary. These studies are appropriately based on outcomes studies, however, it may be that laboratory-based dose management could affect and possibly improve outcomes. Gordon and I propose that we develop a study in which aspirin dosing is based on a combination of patient weight and laboratory test results.
