Lovenox Causes Urinary Tract Bleeding

George received this message from Prof. Emerita Bernadette (Bunny) Rodak, editor and author of Rodak’s Hematology: Clinical Principles and Applications. Bunny has an ovarian tumor accompanied by some clotted abdominal vessels, and has been receiving 120 mg of Lovenox once a day. She has experienced bleeding after each dosage and had asked whether she could receive a smaller dose twice a day. Here is what she learned today: “Lovenox should not make me bleed unless there is a vulnerability in my bladder. Cystoscopy, which I got to watch on the screen, revealed areas of irritation where the ovarian tumor was pressing on my bladder. In surgery under general anesthesia the urologist cauterized the areas of concern, so hopefully all will be OK now. I don’t have a lot of abdominal fat for 2 shots a day!”
