January 2025 Quick Question: PFA 100/200

Our January 2025 Quick Question asked: “To test for platelet function, how do you report PFA-100/200 collagen-epi (CEPI) and collagen-ADP (CADP) results?” Here are the responses from 35 participants:

  1. CEPI only, Neg/Pos: 1 (3%)
  2. CEPI only, CT seconds: 2 (6%)
  3. CEPI & CADP, Neg/Pos: 3 (9%)
  4. CEPI & CADP,  CT: 23 (66%)
  5. We use the bleeding time: 0
  6. We don’t use the PFA 100/200 or bleeding time: 6 (16%)

This Quick Question is a poll that follows up Brenda Goforth’s December 21, 2024 question about how we use the PFA 100/200. Our question and the answers didn’t fully answer Brenda’s question, as she asked if we stopped at the CEPI cartridge result if it is normal. Fortunately, her question attracted answers from Dr. Favaloro and Dave McGlasson. From my observation, most labs stop after the CEPI cartridge result when it is normal, while some repeat the CEPI cartridge for clinical accuracy. Meanwhile, it is encouraging to document the demise of the bleeding time. Please describe your approach in the comments section below.
