Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Van Cott

Just received this sad news forwarded by Bob Gosselin:

Dear MGH Pathology colleagues,
We are writing to share the terribly sad news that our dear colleague, Dr. Betsy Van Cott, passed away yesterday morning. Betsy was known, respected and cherished by so many of us—for her clinical skills, for her gentle demeanor, for her deep caring about the labs and everyone who worked in them, for her extraordinary attention to detail, and for her remarkable perseverance. She was a unique person.
Betsy loved her work and it showed in the quality of her interpretations and in the way she oversaw the Coag Lab. Thinking about her clinical contributions, one must marvel at the number of patients who were helped by her expertise over the decades. She was a world-renowned coagulation expert whose work also benefited patients outside of MGH. For example, she was elected to two terms as President of the North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory Association (NASCOLA) and was Associate or Section Editor at five journals. She was a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and recently received the prestigious William Silen Lifetime Achievement Excellence in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School. Here at MGH, her teaching of coagulation principles and interpretations to our trainees was widely recognized for its effectiveness, and residents from other programs would come over to MGH to learn from Betsy. Her clinical and academic impacts were therefore broad and deep. And, as mentioned, she truly loved her work; her husband mentioned to us that she had worked a full day on Monday, giving it the same level of dedication that she always did.
We were fortunate to have her as a colleague for nearly three decades, and she will be sorely missed.

David Louis, Chief of Pathology, MGH

Kent Lewandrowski, Associate Chief of Pathology, Laboratory and Molecular Medicine, MGH
